Hay una serie de administraciones públicas que han mostrado su apoyo al software libre, ya sea migrando total o parcialmente sus servidores y sistemas de escritorio, o bien subvencionándolo.
El Estado requiere un software que cumpla determinados requisitos y varios de los mismos llevan a utilizar exclusivamente software libre.
Como ejemplos se tiene a Alemania, Argentina, Brasil, Cuba, Chile, China, Ecuador, España, Francia, México, República Dominicana y Venezuela.
